As the owner and publisher of Indie Soul Magazine, it is my goal to make sure that we ALWAYS uphold the culture. Let me be more specific: #BlackCulture!

No matter if I am doing radio, television, and of course print, I am constantly looking for stories that would be of benefit to OUR culture. I love the arts. I love film, especially films that feature stories BY US and FOR US. I once had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Spike Lee, who once shared with me that it was his mission and goal to produce and direct Malcolm X. Lee said that it was more important that truth -OUR truth- be told in not just the X project but in all movies.

My goal is for Indie Soul Magazine to be the forerunner in showcasing stories about indie movie makers and producers. So, in researching information to see if there was a streaming service that catered to OUR audience, I was more than pleasantly surprised to see that there was.

Sure, there is the Urban Movie Channel which showcases black films, Bounce TV’s streaming service and Brown Sugar, which caters to black classic cinema. Even Netflix is doing an incredible job of offering an array of black films that went straight to to DVD and Films from Africa. Way cool! But what I was looking for was much more. Then I stumbled upon kweliTV.

So what is kweliTV?

First, kweli means TRUTH. In other words OUR truth:

“kweliTV is an interactive streaming platform that shares the African Diaspora experience through dope, undiscovered documentaries, films, web shows, children’s programming, news and more. African Diaspora refers to the communities throughout the world of African descent that are comprised of unique cultures and histories from North America, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. Dope & Undiscovered means high-quality content (independent film, news, web shows, kids programming, documentaries) produced by globally diverse and unique filmmakers and journalists who aim to share their stories and truths with the world. 98 percent of our films have been official selections at film festivals and more than half are award winning.”

If you are a film director or producer, kweliTV is perfect for you because you can submit your film at no cost. If it meets the criteria to be shown on their platform, you could be paid based off the performance.
