Women’s Basketball Recaps – November 30

Samford 63, Alabama State 49


 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –  Alabama State struggled offensively in a 63-49 loss to Samford on Wednesday.  Alabama State (1-5) was led by Danielle Ewert, who netted 16 points along with five rebounds.  Kayla Stephens and Britney Wright also scored in double-figures for the Hornets, netting 12 and 11 points respectively.

Alabama State fell behind early in this one. The Hornets were outscored 19-8 in the first quarter, and 12-9 in the second for a 31-17 halftime deficit. The Hornets played a much better second half.  ASU outscored Samford 19-13 in the fourth quarter, but the outcome was already decided.  The Hornets did not shoot the ball well from three point range in this one, going just 1-9 from behind the arc as a team, compared to Samford going 5-12.

Alabama State will continue its road swing on Sunday when the Hornets take on Troy at 3:00PM CT.

New Orleans 63, Texas Southern 57


 NEW ORLEANS, La. – Texas Southern suffered just its second loss of the season falling 63-57 to New Orleans on Wednesday.  Joyce Kennerson lead the Tigers with 15 points, while also adding three rebounds.

Texas Southern (4-2) came out to the early lead in the contest, leading 11-9 at the end of the first quarter. New Orleans would reclaim the lead going into the break 23-21. The game would continue to be close in the second half. Texas Southern was outscored by just one point to make the score 39-36 going into the final frame. New Orleans would pull away late to take the win.  Texas Southern shot the ball better then New Orleans despite the loss, going 21-50 from the field for a .420 field goal percentage.

Next up, Texas Southern will travel to Houston Baptist for a contest on Dec. 4 at 4:00 PM CT.
