Middletown, MD – November 25, 2016 – Today South Mountain Creamery, Middletown, MD and Hometown Harvest Frederick, MD announced an unprecedented local partnership that will bring an unmatched combination of fresh farm products delivered direct to customers doors in Maryland, DC and Virginia making eating local, living a healthy lifestyle and supporting local farms easy and convenient. Both very successful home delivery services on their own with nearly ten thousand customers between them. South Mountain and Hometown will share product lines and delivery routes, bringing together a tantalizing selection of local veggies, dairy, eggs, meats, bakery items along with prepared soups, salads, meals and much more.
The partnership is a family affair. Frederick County natives, Randy and Karen Sowers started their dairy operation in 1981 on a rented farm which they were soon able to purchase. In 2001, they opened the first Maryland on farm dairy processing facility, South Mountain Creamery. The idea of the Milkman was reborn with their first 13 delivery customers. Now they deliver to over 8500 homes. Their son Ben and his wife Kate now run the day-to-day operations, but that doesn’t stop Randy and Karen from rising at 1:30am to milk the cows.
Abby Sowers grew up on the farm with her brother Ben and in 2009 with her husband Tony Brusco started Hometown Harvest, an online farmers’ market. Hometown grew quickly and now represents over 300 local farmers and producers in addition to selling veggies from their own home farm to serve nearly 2000 customers. Earlier this year they opened their own commercial kitchen and created their own line of signature salads, soups, stocks and stews and just recently an amazing line of slow cooker meals.
Ben Sowers, “At South Mountain Creamery, we pride ourselves on producing the freshest tastiest dairy products imaginable. All the milk comes from our cows grazing right here on our luscious pastures. They are milked by our own hand and the result goes directly into the Creamery, then to the doorstep of our customer. You can taste the fresh difference. Our partnership with Hometown Harvest will mean we can offer our customers a wider away of fresh from the farm products making eating local, living a healthy style and supporting local farms easy and convenient.”
Tony Brusco, “Building Hometown Harvest has been an amazing personal journey for Abby and I. It grew out of our focus on living a healthy lifestyle, eating healthy, protecting local farms and sustainable practices. The response from local food enthusiasts has been very rewarding. We know our farmers well, work with them constantly to plan for our customers’ needs and understand all their growing practices. With the success of both South Mountain Creamery and Hometown Harvest and a mission to the same end, we are excited to work together. Now we can bring the freshest, tastiest milk available as well as other pastured protein products to our customers making eating local, living a healthy style and supporting local farms easy and convenient.”
