North Carolina Central sophomore Gabriel Cucalon was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week today, with teammate Theofanis Kontopoulos earning Rookie of the Week honors. On the women’s side, Howard senior Jessica Josiah and North Carolina A&T State sophomore Sheyla Ramirez were named Co-Players of the Week.

Cucalon (6-0, 170, So., Guayaquil, Ecuador) played in the No. 1 singles position in both of the Eagles’ matches this past weekend, earning a three-set win against Presbyterian College on Saturday. He won 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-4 over the Blue Hose’ Diego Manzanas, who at the time had 49 career dual-match wins.

Kontopoulos (6-2, 170, Fr., Corinthos, Greece) earned his first collegiate win in just his second career match Saturday against Presbyterian. Playing in the No. 2 singles slot, Kontopoulos defeated Presbyterian’s Jamie Castillo-Lopez in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

Josiah (5-11, Sr., Sacramento, Calif.) picked up a straight-set win over Laura Gutierrez of St. Francis (PA) on Saturday, winning 6-3, 6-4.

Ramirez (5-4, So., Nueva Bolivia, Venezuela) picked up her first singles win of the season on Tuesday at Wofford, winning 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) against the Terriers’ Catherine Martin.
