Women’s Basketball Recaps – November 25
Mississippi Valley State 68, Northwestern State 64
NATCHITOCHES, La. – Mississippi Valley State improved its record to 2-2 on the season with a 68-64 win over Northwestern State on Friday. Christine Reed netted a game high 18 points along with four assists and two rebounds in the win. Ashley Beals also had a strong performance, tallying 16 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double in the victory.
The contest was close early on. MVSU led 16-14 after one quarter. MVSU would let its early lead slip away in the second quarter. MVSU was outscored 10-2 in the second quarter to go into the break trailing 24-18. MVSU would come out strong in the third, outscoring Northwestern State 26-16 in the third quarter. That margin proved to be enough as MVSU would hold on for the victory. The teams were very evenly matched statistically in this contest. Each team recorded 41 rebounds, and also made the same number of field goals (20).
MVSU will play next on Monday Nov. 28, when they take on University of Alabama at Birmingham at 7:00PM CT.
Miami 89, Grambling State 61
MIAMI, Fla. – Grambling State fell to Miami (FL) 89-61 in the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday. Shakyla Hill led GSU with 16 points along with six rebounds. Jazmin Boyd also contributed 11 points and three rebounds along with two steals in the loss.
Grambling State was outmatched from the opening tip in this contest. The Hurricanes outscored GSU 22-14 in the first quarter. GSU would fall behind 45-24 at halftime. The Lady Tigers would not be able to recover from the deficit. Defense was a major factor in the loss. Grambling State would allow Miami to go 35-70 from the field as a team for a .500 shooting percentage.
The Lady Tigers will be in action again on Sunday Nov. 27 when they take on Fordham at 1:00PM CT.
UT Rio Grand Valley 82, Prairie View A&M 74
EDINBURG, Texas – Prairie View A&M fell to UT Rio Grand Valley 82-74 on Friday night in the UTRGV Tournament. Prairie View A&M was lead by Alexus Parker, who notched a double-double. Scoring 20 points, along with 11 rebounds. Tori Carter also had a strong showing in the loss, netting 18 points along with grabbing 7 boards.
The game was close throughout. The score was ties 18-18 after the first quarter of play. The Panthers would trail 34-29 at the half. Prairie View would cut the deficit to three points heading into the decisive fourth quarter. However the Panthers would allow the game to slip away ultimately resulting in the defeat. Prairie View A&M struggled from the free throw line in this contest. Going just 21-36 for a .583 free throw percentage as a team, which proved to be a big factor in the game.
Next up, Prairie View A&M will play Marshall tomorrow, Nov. 26 at 4:30PM CT as they continue play in the UTGRV Tournament.
Southern Miss 99, Alcorn State 56
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Alcorn State lost to Southern Miss 99-56 in the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic on FridayNight. Miracle Rushing and Tia Sanders lead Alcorn State with 11 points each in the contest. Rushing finished two rebounds shy of a double-double with eight in the loss.
Alcorn State kept the game close early on, trailing 20-14 after one quarter of play. Alcorn State would let the game get away from them in the second quarter. The Braves were out scored 23-9 in the second quarter, The Braves could not overcome that deficit in the second half of play, proving any effort of a comeback obsolete. Rebounds proved to be a big factor in the game. Alcorn State was out rebounded 31-55 as a team, and 18-30 on the defensive end.
The Braves will continue play in the Eagle Thanksgiving Classic, when the Braves take on Southeast Missouri State at 1:30 PM CT.
