Raleigh, NC (Oct. 1) – Saint Augustine’s University placed first in the men’s 8K race and second in the women’s 5K run among Division II schools in the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro, N.C., on Saturday, Sept. 30.
The Falcons, bolstered by five top 15 finishers, scored 33 points to defeat Livingstone College (40), Elizabeth City State University (47) and Winston-Salem State University (98). All four schools are members of the CIAA conference.
Nikolas Thomas (So./Capital Heights, MD) placed fourth (30:45.31) and Ja-mont Hike-Charles (Fr./Portsmouth, VA) was sixth (31:01.40) while Jose Penalver (Fr./Caracas, Venezuela) finished seventh (31:08.68) for the Falcons. Gregory Mathews was 14th (33:44.49) and Robert Walker (Fr./Newburgh, NY) placed 15th(33:52.47).
The Lady Falcons placed five runners in the top 13 to finish second with 32 points. Winston-Salem State won the women’s 5K race (27) while Elizabeth City State was third (78) and Shaw University fourth (97).
Florence Fields (Fr./St. Michaels, Barbados) and Shannon Kalawan led the Lady Falcons with fourth- (21:43.84) and fifth-place finishes (21:45.35), respectively. Iris Robinson (Jr./Birmingham, AL) was seventh (22:02.25), Alexus Wells finished 10th (23:28.86) and Nia Erwin-Sherrod (Jr./Philadelphia, PA) placed 13th(23:45.70).
The Falcons and Lady Falcons compete again Saturday, Oct. 7 at the HBCU Challenge at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The men’s 8K race begins at 9:30 a.m. and the women’s 5K race starts at 10:05 p.m.
