MEAC Announces Weekly Tennis Honors

North Carolina Central sophomore Gabriel Cucalon was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week today, with teammate Theofanis Kontoloupos earning Rookie of the Week honors. On the women’s side, North Carolina Central junior Jamie Rogers was named Player of the Week, while teammate Frida Cnossen earned Rookie of the Week honors.

Cucalon (6-0, So., Guayaquil, Ecuador) was 3-0 this past week with straight-set singles wins against Coppin State, Loyola (Md.) and Howard. After defeating Coppin State’s Gabriel Franca 6-0, 6-1, Cucalon defeated Loyola’s Blest Jones 6-3, 6-2 and Howard’s Ismael Kaouache 6-3, 6-4. All three wins came in the No. 1 singles position, and Cucalon improved to 5-3 in singles play this season.

Kontoloupos (6-2, Fr., Corinthos, Greece) was 6-0 this past week, going 3-0 in both singles and doubles play. All three of his singles victories came in straight sets – including a 6-1, 6-4 win over Coppin State’s Christian Duchnak – and he helped the Eagles win their first two matches of the season. Kontopoulos was also unbeaten in doubles play alongside new partner Davide Callegari.

Rogers (5-6, Jr., Cary, N.C.) won her first singles match of the season this past Saturday, defeating Jordan Strickland of Western Carolina 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) in the No. 1 singles position. She also teamed with Cnossen in a hard-fought 6-4 doubles defeat.

Cnossen (5-8, Fr., Laren, Netherlands) picked up her first collegiate singles win over Western Carolina’s Savannah Taranto, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles position. She also teamed with Rogers in a hard-fought 6-4 doubles defeat.

Other Top Performers

Jose Plazas (B-CU) defeated Stetson’s Graham Ball 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8), while also picking up a doubles win alongside Juan Ruiz Diego.

Andres Diaz (CSU) defeated North Carolina Central’s Maksym Konovakov 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) in the No. 4 singles position.

Sandy Lochu (SSU) picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over North Carolina A&T State’s Khalia Powell.
