NEW ORLEANS, La. – Third-seeded Alcorn State and fourth-seeded Prairie View A&M will be moving on to the 2017 SWAC Men’s Tennis Tournament Semifinals after picking up victories Friday afternoon at the Pepsi Tennis Center.
The Braves defeated No. 5 Arkansas-Pine Bluff 4-1 behind wins from No. 1 and SWAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year Kert Kilumets, No. 3. Nikita Kostikov and No. 4 Nischay Rawal.
Top doubles duos Kostikov and Kilumets bested Sajid Rahman and Simon Lewis 6-2 and Rawal and Nuno Rocha teamed to top Jualon Greig and Le’Darrien Ledbetter 6-2 as well to secure the doubles point.
Kilumets, Kostikov and Rawal all won each in straight sets in singles competition.
Alcorn State will advance to play against No. 2 seed Jackson State on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
In the other quarterfinal match, the Panthers had a battle a bit longer to put away UAPB, needing the most amount of matches needed on the day to eventually win 4-2.
PVAM received wins in the singles competition from No. 2 Ulrick Boyogueno, No. 5 Freddy Quintero and No. 6 Zachary Suico.
Boyogueno went the distance against senior Carlos Salas, stretching to a third set before winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Suico dropped the opening set before rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against freshman Jarib Beazer. Quintero took his match against Joshua Wilson in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
The Panthers picked up the doubles point on the strength of wins from Quintero and Suico and Avella and Anirudh Yadav.
Prairie View A&M advances to play against No. 1 seed Alabama State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
