HBCU Round-Up: Softball Players of the Week: March 21

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alcorn State outfielder Mariah Ortiz and Prairie View A&M pitcher Ashley Higgins have been recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference as Softball Players of the Week for their performance in contests from March 15-20.

Hitter of the Week
Mariah Ortiz
OF | 5’3 | Junior | Glendale, Ariz.

Ortiz extended her hitting streak to nine games and recorded multiple hits in three of her last four contests. She batted .500 (11-for-22) on the week. Four of those 11 hits went for extra bases including two triples. She also scored a team-high seven runs. On the year, Ortiz is hitting .343 with 23 total hits and has scored 20 runs for the Lady Braves.

Pitcher of the Week
Ashley Higgins

The sophomore lefty went 3-0 in her last three starts, winning two games against Jackson State and throwing her first collegiate no-hitter against Jarvis Christian. In her first start vs. Jackson State, she allowed five earned runs in 5.1 innings during a 7-5 win and she followed that with a complete-game outing where she allowed one run on six hits (7-1 W). In her no-hitter vs. Jarvis Christian (8-0 W), she struck out two and allowed just two base runners via walk.
