HBCU Round-Up: MEAC Announces Weekly Baseball Honors

Bethune-Cookman junior Jameel Edney was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Florida A&M’s Russell Ruah earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Bethune-Cookman senior Donte’ Lindsay and Delaware State junior Darrien Ragins were named Co-Pitchers of the Week.

Edney (5-8, 175, Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) hit a combined .500 (11-for-22) this past week in helping Bethune-Cookman to a 5-0 record – including a three-game sweep of MEAC Southern Division foe North Carolina Central. Five of his 11 hits were for extra bases (three doubles, a triple and a home run), and he drove in 10 runs for the week – including six in the series opener against NCCU (a game in which he was 4-for-4 at the plate). Edney was 7-for-13 in the NCCU series with three doubles and seven RBIs.

Ruah (6-5, 190, Fr., Tallahassee, Fla.) played a big role in the Rattlers’ three-game sweep of MEAC Southern Division foe Savannah State, going a combined 3-for-9 (.333) at the plate in the series with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. He hit his first collegiate home run in the second game of the series on Saturday, a shot that proved to be the difference in Florida A&M’s 4-3 win.

Lindsay (6-3, 185, Sr., Cleveland, Ohio) threw seven innings of one-hit ball against North Carolina Central, giving up just one unearned run while striking out six in the series finale. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of a game that ended after seven innings via the run rule, and Lindsay picked up his first win on the bump this season.

Ragins (6-2, 200, Jr., Severn, Md.) came in for relief in the ninth inning of the Hornets’ game at Norfolk State with two runners on and nobody out. From there, he struck out the side to pick up his first save of the season, allowing Delaware State to complete the comeback victory in the series opener.
